great app, shitty dev. do i support them?
i have recently watched a video by louis rossmann on why he's ditching graphene os. long story short, the founder of the project, daniel micay was sort of dramatical in his messages and tried to force louis to delete a comment he made, or else!(tun dun dun!!!). louis makes a point that he "cannot use the operating system from somebody who talks like this gentleman has" and initially, i agreed. from the video, the guy did seem pretty, uh, intense.
that made me think of linus tornvalds, the man who has recently said about kernel maintainers getting slop commits:
We are completely overwhelmed, of course. The glimmer of hope is that we secured sufficient LLM budget and access (thank you Meta!) to run reviews with multiple frontier models on each patch. This eliminates some hallucinations.
that's pretty offputting. i will not even touch on the obvious things, like his discriminatory practices, how conceited and generally rude he is. personally, i really dislike the guy - the title is about him, not the graphene os people.
but anyway. if i dislike him, should i really not support his product? what would it look like for me not to use linux at all? would sacrificing convenience and increasing time to prod for my pet-projects be worth it? what would i be proving, exactly, if the linux distros that i am using are free?
if someone switches from graphene os because of the personality of the creator where would they go, exactly? would the argument be made that the devs over at apple or google (lol) any better?
i do not have the answer to these questions. where is the line? my former classmates are using discord, which requires some people to provide personal information about yourself, in some cases your passport or a video selfie. i do not support that. does that mean i should just firmly tell my classmates that i am out? won't it cost me some acquaintances? or is this fine and a price to pay for having a stance - any stance?
